Embrace
Dancer: Melody Muniz
Music: Who Got Me
This piece for me was all about accepting and embracing my true self. I've always loved dancing and this year I've experimented so much more with creative flows. Learning about directions and levels as the basic building blocks of dance really enhanced my understanding of the art form. One dance can be rearranged into 20 different dances simply by changing one aspect. The calming, flowy song I chose mirrored my own sense of calm when I am dancing - I am able to enter into a flow state where it's just me and my body. For me, dancing is an act of self-love and being able to do it more often is such a gratifying experience.

Dance has always helped me cope with the stressors that I face and I can't wait to continue to perform as a way to overcome and showcase my triumph over adversity.

Each of us took dance for a reason, whether it be to escape the stress of school, to avoid the expectation of good grades, or to elude the standards that we place upon ourselves. We want our piece to showcase our usage of this class as an escape from our various stressors and to prove how healthy dance can be as a getaway from the hardships of everyday life. We are each grateful for movement and need this class for our own, personal reason. While the individuals in the group have different circumstances for taking the class, dance was able to bring us together and allows us to perform as one.
