Rehearsal Journal

Rehearsal Log Suggested Guidelines

Log each rehearsal by writing down the total length of the rehearsal and the tasks that were accomplished in chronological order.

Reflect on each rehearsal in a journal entry.  The journal should provide a space in which you can reflect on the rehearsal you just had and consider how that might shape the rehearsal you are about to have.  My suggestion is to pick a particular question/challenge/discovery and spend significant time with it (as opposed to simply reporting in on many aspects of the rehearsal).  The journal truly should be a helpful step of your artistic process as opposed to  Here are some questions that you might consider while writing a journal entry:

1 ) What important discoveries were made during the rehearsal?
2 ) What led to those discoveries?
3 ) Towards where do those discoveries lead?
4 ) Consider questions #1-3 except focus on important roadblocks/dead ends.
5 ) Reflect on dramatic action and conflict.  How’s it going?  What actions does this suggest?
6 ) Reflect on transformational leadership.  How’s it going?  What actions does this suggest?
7 ) Reflect on the journey of one or both of the actors with whom you are working.  How’s it going?  What needs to happen next?
8 ) What is the most important thing that happened (or didn’t happen) in your recent rehearsal?  Unpack its importance.
9 ) What is the most important thing that could happen in your next rehearsal?  How will you shape the rehearsal in order to increase the odds of that “thing” happening?
10 ) Consider where you’re at in the grand scheme of all rehearsals.  How’s it going?  What actions does this suggest?

Your journal entries should be authentic and rigorous.  They should engage both theory and practice.  They should use your own examples from rehearsal and our shared vocabulary.

Each of us took dance for a reason, whether it be to escape the stress of school, to avoid the expectation of good grades, or to elude the standards that we place upon ourselves. We want our piece to showcase our usage of this class as an escape from our various stressors and to prove how healthy dance can be as a getaway from the hardships of everyday life. We are each grateful for movement and need this class for our own, personal reason. While the individuals in the group have different circumstances for taking the class, dance was able to bring us together and allows us to perform as one.
